Benjamin Franklin Rowland was born in Cabletown, Jefferson County, Virginia on November 11, 1827. In the late 1840s he migrated to Illinois with his parents, Henry Daniel Rowland and Elizabeth Heffelbower. Married on November 4, 1852 in Lanark, Carroll County, Illinois to Mary Butterbaugh (sometimes found as Puterbaugh), the couple thereafter lived and farmed in Ogle County where Benjamin died in 1888. Widow Mary eventually moved to Los Angeles County, California where, according to the 1910 census, she is in the household of a daughter. She died in Altadena, California in 1916 and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery.
Benjamin's stone is engraved, "Benjamin F. Rowland, Died Oct. 1, 1888, Aged 60 y, 10 m, 19 d."
