John Hart CRENSHAW

Hickory Hill Cemetery
Gallatin County,
Illinois

Although William C. (d. 1815) and his wife Elizabeth (d. 1829) are mentioned on the west side of the stone, they are not believed to have been buried in this cemetery, but on their original homestead. The reverse side of the stone is for William's son John Hart Crenshaw (1797-1871) and his wife Sina (1799-1881). It's possible that this is the original stone for the parents that John may have had moved to the new family cemetery on Hickory Hill near his plantation home about two miles west of Equality, Illinois. The younger Crenshaw's home is what is now known as the "Old Slave House" the last station on the Reverse Underground Railroad still known to be standing.
