What Remains
BY P. J. L.
What remains after the shock at the sudden absurd death?
What remains?
Remains the awakening consciousness
Remains the reality of the eternal life
Remains the cue to remind us of that which we have
and invisible but always present ring of wedlock
on our finger of matrimony to Death.

What remains?
Not the empty chair in the classroom,
Not the empty chair by the table among his friends,
Not the empty bed at home.
Remains his smile, his conversation, his gestures
And the child good night kiss to his mother,
All that remains.
His image is well carved in our memory
And deep in our love is his affection.
He was a good boy,
He was.
And when we look for some one whom we consider the epitome
of gentility, kindness and sportsmanship
We shall always have in mind our Brian, the gentleman boy.
What remains?
The absurd sudden death
Should tell us of our borrowed life
And of what we should will for our immortality.
Love, a son, a tree or a book.
Days are long or short according to the harvest
we reap at the end of each day.
Thus in his twenty two years he reaped good will among men.
What a green orchard with vines he left.
Never say that he has gone. Never.
No matter how young in years he was
He left among us the wish we all harbor of
the ideal young man
Who everybody wants for a son, a brother and a companion.
Long live our friend
in the mystery of life and death.
