Concord Cemetery
Morgan County,
Illinois

John: Apr 15, 1821 - Aug 16, 1901
Harriet: July 2, 1825 - Feb 22, 1895

John S. True was born in Pittsfield, N.H., April 15, 1821, and died in Fowler, Ill., Aug. 16, 1901, aged 80 years and 4 months. Of late years he had suffered a great deal and he finally succumbed to old age. He was married to Miss Harriet M. Vent at Pittsfield, N.H., April 9, 1843. To this union four children were born, two boys and two girls, both boys dying, however, in their infancy. The daughters are Flora Adelaide, now Mrs. Newton and Nellie, now Mrs. Arthur Williams. He is also survived by a brother and sister, vix: Lyman L. True and Mrs. Dr. Abbey.

In 1844, the year following his marriage, he came to this state, and settled in Joy Prairie, where he has lived happily for 51 years. His wife lived in love and peace with him during all that time until about six and one-half years ago, when she was called from earth. They were pioneers in this part of the country and the frugal habits and the rugged honesty which they acquired in those early days remained with them to the end of their days upon earth.

Deceased (John) was not a member of any church, but he never opposed them, while on the other hand he always assisted liberally in supporting them, and while he was not a Christian, the Christian acts which he performed are innumerable. He was a Mason in good standing, a faithful and valuable member of the Concord lodge for many ears, and he was widely known as a kind father, a loving brother and a trustworthy friend. While he had lived more than the time usually allotted to man, his friends were not prepared to see him go when the end came, and he will be greatly mourned and missed by all the many people who knew him.

The funeral which was one of the largest ever seen in the community, was conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. Wm. Smith, pastor of the Joy Prairie Congregational church, having charge of the services. The Masonic order of Concord took charge of the remains at the grave.
